I’m going to admit something up front here. This post is going to rant about something. It is, however, very important for anyone who creates content on the web.
It’s very important. It helps clear up your blog feed and your site content. It makes it easier for your audience and prospective followers to peruse your content. Most importantly-it makes it easier for your audience to scroll through their feed without having to read your 8,000+ word story because you were too lazy to click a button after the first paragraph.
It’s the read more tag.
I can’t tell you how many times I have scrolled through my tumblr feed or my wordpress feed just to find that someone couldn’t be bothered to click the read more tag icon. You should be able to hook your reader with the beginning of the story, or the article, or the post, or whatever, without forcing them to look at its entirety.
You will then experience some big issues:
- TL;DR or Too Long; Didn’t Read
- The audience won’t return to read.
- Annoyance (which I am experiencing now)
- Total disregard
Too Long Didn’t Read
You could’ve had me. We could’ve had something magical. But you had to go and spoil it by posting something that would rival the Norton Anthologies. If you have a long story, or a long article, break it up. No one wants to sit at their desk and read a hefty post.
I’m Not Going Back for It
This is your second or so post which has done this. The first paragraph didn’t catch my attention so I’m not even going to save this for later because I don’t want to read it. But now I have to scroll through all of this just to find either your next post or someone else’s post.
This is your third or so post which has done this and I’m tired of you taking up my entire blog feed. Maybe I’m missing content that I’d like to read or see but I can’t actually get to it because it’s 12 minutes later and I’m still scrolling through your dribble. Think of the reader who isn’t necessarily interested in every word you say.
Unfriending you. Unfollowing you. I never want to see your posts again!
In essence-your audience is lazy. BUT YOU ARE EVEN LAZIER FOR NOT CLICKING ON A LITTLE BUTTON THAT WOULD MAKE EVERYONE’S LIVES EASIER! Imagine, as a writer, you have your blog, you post some fiction, or whatever it is that you post and here comes someone who might be interested in your work. They read the first bit of your latest post and they aren’t that impressed but they still have high hopes for you and decide to scroll onto the next piece of content. Maybe that next piece is what hooks them. Maybe it would have been anyway if they could actually get to the next post. Instead, they have to sit through your Elvish dissertation and, in the end, you aren’t for them. In fact, you aren’t for a lot of people because they can’t get to all of your content.
So do it for yourself.
Do it for me.
